My Date Says He Is An Investor. Is He Just Unemployed? What is Investing?

flik eco finance personal what is investing

Let's face it, we've all been there, sitting on a date with someone who looks good, has a great smile but something just feels off! You can imagine them falling over and just sliding down the street, they are just way too smooth, lathered in baby oil and running through a crowd naked type of smooth. Then he drops..."i'm an investor", wtf is that?

What is Investing?

Yes, investing is a real job AND you could start investing yourself to make your money grow, so what the hell is is?

Investing isn’t as scary as it sounds, really it’s just the complete opposite of saving your money in a little jar. Saving is putting some of your cash away in a bank account and watching it earn a tiny amount of interest each year, 0.5% to 3%. Safe, secure, predictable and boring. Pretty much like swiping right James on Tinder that ticks all the boxes - rugby check, lives in Clapham, check and has lived in Australia for a year, check.

Investing on the other hand, is pretty trying to make your money turn into more money by taking a risk with it. If everything goes well you earn more money from your investment…the higher the risk, the higher the potential reward.

You can pretty much invest in anything:

  • Shares
  • Mutual Funds
  • Bonds
  • Property
  • Cars
  • Wine
  • Art

When Should I Start Investing?

If you're broke, living off credit card debt and going on dates just so you can go to fancy restaurants...you probably shouldn't start investing.

Once you have 6 months worth of "emergency cash" stashed away in a boring ISA or savings account, you should start thinking about investing and open a Stocks & Share ISA.

What Are Some Great Investment Platforms?

Nutmeg

I'm a big fan of Nutmeg, I started using them when I first started to invest a bit of my salary every month and just wanted to use something simple that delivered results.

Hargreaves Lansdown

If you're looking to start investing and want to research, and actually make your own investments in stocks & shares, then Hargreaves Landsdown is one of the best trading platforms in my opinion. You can use your Stocks & Shares ISA allowance with HL which is a huge benefit!
